Slice of Life in Soton U

Posted by Wazit | Posted in | Posted on 6:05 AM

For all who didn't know, Soton is just a pet name or short form of Southampton. Anyway yeah, enough talking about my room. I am about to shift room in 2 weeks time anyway. *sigh* No more ensuite facilities... oh well. Anyway yeah, about the university, it's big! The campuses are scattered across Southampton itself and the halls of residences in between are also under the university. There are three main campus: the Highfield campus, the Avenue campus and the Boldrewood campus. I guess Southampton General Hospital itself is a campus somewhat, but it's still mainly a hospital.

Anyway, Highfield campus is where all the main administrative offices and most of the courses take place while Avenue campus is where the School of Humanities is. Boldrewood is under the midst of deconstruction. However, there is sill some offices in the campus but they will soon be moving out. Anyway, this campus is where the School of Health Sciences is, including the School of Medicine for the pre-clinical years. The School of Medicine for the clinical years is located at the hospital itself.

Why hello there. Let me give you a guided tour of the university grounds. In this post, I'll be mainly talking about the halls of residences and the Highfield campus though.

First, let me introduce the Soton group :D Clockwise, there's Delia, Zalikha, Harveen, Jacqueline, Yee Xuan, me, Sal and Alex. The only one missing in the picture is Asha (no, not Asha Gill) who's taking the picture.

There's not much cars here in the university area. There's more in the city center but still much less than back in Malaysia. Another thing is the drivers here are all very patient, willing to wait to let you walk across the road and not cutting other people at the road.

Unlike London, Southampton has the traditional charm of nice brick houses with chimneys :D

Oh, and did I mention Southampton is full of greens?

Lots of them? With nice fresh green trees and grass :D

As well as pretty flowers to match XD

Now, a quick visit back to the halls. This is Roll Court, where I stay. Yeah, forgot to mention there's quite a lot of people who cycle here. Not as much as China but still more than Malaysia. Maybe I'll take up cycling when I have the time.

And this is the interior part of Roll Court. Oooh... shiny!

This is the Student Union's building located in the Highfield Campus area. It's like the SRC of IMU, except much bigger.

This is Highfield Interchange. Many of the buses in Southampton stop by here. Consider it KL Sentral located in the university grounds itself. The University even has their own bus service called Unilink, connecting the various halls together, the hospital, the city center as well as some of the supermarkets nearby. Not bad... except that at the moment many of the buses only come hourly since term time hasn't officially started.

And this is Burgress Road, or more widely known among us as the 'Bank Road' since all the university branches of banks are located along this road, just side-by-side. You can't really see the banks with this picture since it's blocked by the cars and trees.

This is Hartley Library... the main library of the university. Looks impressive eh? There's also another public library near the university, within walking distance from where I live. In the general hospital, there's also a Health Sciences library where most of the medical books and journals are kept.

These row of shoplots are restaurants owned and run by the Student Union. There are shops that sell hot food as well as coffee shops and bars. And since it's run by the Student Union, there's extra discount for students :D

And this is the scene in the lecture theatre for registration day of Year 3 medical students. So many Caucasians.... @.@ and there's only one other Malaysian who joined the programme from Year 1.

On another note, Occupational Health (that's the department that makes sure all health care professionals working in the hospital are fit to practice and don't spread diseases around) said that I had to get a Mantoux test because BCG might not protect me fully against TB. =.= It itches!

Alright, that's all for now. It's getting late again and I have classes tomorrow. Tune in next time!
