IMU Convocation Day '09

Well, Wednesday was convocation day for IMU. For many, it would be a day where graduates are officially called doctors and it would also signal a time for them to venture out into the world for their own jobs. It would be a day where graudates are dressed up in beautiful gowns, hoods and mortarboards, the hallmark attire of a full-fledged graduate. It's a day all graduates hope to reach some day... to go up to a stage and collect the scroll they worked so hard to get. And yesterday, we were given a taste of where we might end up 3-4 years from now.
Yesterday, we finally manage to reap the fruits of our labor for 2.5 years. And unfortunately, we still have 3-4 years of hard work ahead of us. Yes, lots of my friends have graduated or started working and I'm still stuck halfway through my course. However, now I know whenever I feel like giving up, I can always look back and remember how nice those gowns with colourful hoods and mortarboards look and how I might be able to wear them someday XD. For now, all we got is just a black gown. But eh, at least it is better than nothing eh?
Tuesday was practice for convocation day. And IMU wanted things to be extra prim and proper on convo day. Why? Because our very own 84-year old former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir was going to attend that day for he was bestowed an honorary Doctor of Medicine award. So, naturally IMU wanted everything to go on well that day. For most of us though, (for me anyway) it was a day just to meet up with old friends and catch up with them right before we go off on our seperate ways, not knowing when we will meet again.
Irony strikes on convocation day for it was not human error that caused a hiccup in the event, but it was techincal errors in the form of two blackouts that disrupted the event. From what I heard though, it was not long and lasted for only five minutes. Excluding that, it was a pretty successful event overall. I had to admit though, it was my first time seeing Tun in the flesh and it left me slightly star-struck XD. So, I got in the same picture as Mahathir during the group photo shoot but judging from the number of people in the photo, I guess my face would look just like a small grain :/
Anyway, the auditorium where the event was being held was not big enough to support the number of parents, graduates and faculties. So, some of the graduates have to wait in another hall. Since we were the least important among the graduates, we naturally had to wait in that hall. Well, at least we received a live telecast on what's happening in the auditorium from that hall. Oh, and it gave us the freedom to camwhore among ourselves XD. And no, I don't have pictures of Tun. Don't want to get pinned down by his bodyguards D:

Tjun Hoe - The half guy/half girl XD

Mr Yap - Always fidgeting around whenever I put my hand on his shoulder. DON'T TOUCH ME!

Ren Ping - The supplier of most of my notes since Sem 1 XD

May Quan - One whom I always call 'Cousin' =D

Chia Lee - The refugee from Southampton heading to Australia D:

Ignore the awkwardly placed ribbon near the tummy. =.= Initially I had problems figuring out how to put the gown on.

Dr Srikumar - One of our first pathology lecturers we came to know in IMU

Live telecast of what was happening in the auditorium
Finally, me and my parents. So glad they came :D
The event ended about 12 noon and by that time we were hungry as hell. I didn't really had any breakfast anyway. Luckily, there was a nice buffet down in the canteen, courtesy of Sheraton Hotel. Not bad, I have to say. Tons of times better than normal canteen food when I was still there. So after lunch, we went to Mid Valley to catch a movie. After all, it was high time for the after-convocation party XD Half of us went to see G.I. Joe and the other half, me included, went instead to see The Proposal. Overall, it was quite a fun but physically draining day. Lastly, a message from us:

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, smell no evil, touch no evil and errr.... I don't know what's Ren Ping doing.
